Using Esri® ArcGIS® for Local Government and the Local Government Information Model (LGIM), governments can maximize their operations through innovative use of GIS with the latest tools and resources. With an emphasis on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions, local governments can now deploy select applications from a wide set of web maps, web apps, data models, and other ArcGIS tools focused upon empowering local governments to meet their operational duties.

The maps, apps, and tools of the public works focus area helps you to maintain right-of-way assets, meet transportation and environmental quality needs, coordinate and plan capital projects, and operate parks and government facilities in a safe and effective way.
Within public works, there are several collections of specialized tools, maps, and apps that are still fully configurable. These collections include Maintain Public Road Network, Inventory Right of Way Assets, Maximize Capital Investments, Connect with Citizens, Prepare for Incidents and Events, and Maintain Facilities and Grounds. In this blog post, we will focus on preconfigured maps for asset inventory solutions data collection and different tools available for communicating information with the public.
There are several preconfigured Collector maps for public works that exist to help maximize efficiency and streamline the field to office process. Inventory Right of Way Assets is a collection of maps used by field staff to inventory signs, signals, streetlights, bridges, and other visible assets in the public right of way.
Here at Elecdata®, we have experience creating and configuring maps and applications for custom asset inventory solutions that include street sign inventories with customized symbology and automated attributes, and guardrail inventories with related tables for inspections. This data can integrate with ArcGIS for Server to be accessible throughout the entire organization.
Communicating and Sharing Information With the Public
There are so many applications that are a part of public works that allow organizations to share information with the public, and allow the public to communicate with the Public Works department.
Snow Operations Dashboard
Snow Common Operational Picture (SnowCOP) is a configuration of ArcGIS Online and Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS that can be used by public works operations managers to monitor snow event responses and correlate citizen complaints; and current vehicle locations with planned response activities so resources can be maximized when responding to the event.
Locate Parks or Activities
Citizens on a smartphone, tablet, or computer can locate a park or recreation facility and obtain information about recreation activities in their community with the Park Locator application.
Find Government Services
The My Government Services application can be used by residents to locate a government facility, and obtain information about curbside and drop-off services provided by a government agency.
Citizen Problem Reporter
The Citizen Problem Reporter application can be used by the general public to submit non-emergency problems or requests for service in their community from a smartphone, tablet, and desktop computer. Geoforms are highly configurable web entry forms that provide information that is easily viewed in a dynamic web map. Click here to view an example.
